TICAD 30th Anniversary — Tunisia 2023
To celebrate three decades of the Tokyo International Conference on African Development, interim TICAD Games were organized in Tunisia. The 2023 edition expanded the format beyond Kendō into a richer People-to-People programme, reinforcing the diplomatic friendship axis between Africa and Japan.
Budō — Two Abe Cups, Two Training Camps
The Budō programme paired two competition days with two intensive training camps:
- The Kendō Abe Cup assembled practitioners across age and grade categories for the second consecutive year of the cup.
- The Judō Abe Cup brought the gentle way alongside the way of the sword for the first time, broadening the martial-arts pillar of the Games.
- Grausem sensei and Livolsi sensei each led a dedicated training camp, transmitting technique and spirit to a new generation of Tunisian and African practitioners.
Culture — Japanese Gardens with Kitaura sensei
Kitaura sensei delivered a public conference on the *art and philosophy of Japanese gardens*, opening a window onto the aesthetic codes that have shaped Japan's relationship to nature for centuries — an architectural counterpart to the Ikebana and garden demonstrations introduced in 2022.
People-to-People — Majerda Friendship Tournament
The Majerda Friendship handball tournament turned the Games into a wider sporting embrace, bringing teams together in the spirit of friendship that defines the TICAD process. A reminder that *People-to-People* is not just a tagline — it is the format itself.
